Guarded Endorsement for Lyme Disease Vaccine

Article Abstract:

A committee advising the FDA recommends approval of a new vaccine to protect against Lyme disease. Lyme disease is an infection spread by ticks which can produce debilitating fatigue, arthritis, and other serious health problems. Tests of the vaccine, called LYMErix, have demonstrated that three doses provide protection in about 79% of people vaccinated. Researchers are concerned that the vaccine may interfere with tests for Lyme disease, and about a high rate of adverse reactions. Nevertheless, the vaccine can provide protection for people in areas where the disease is endemic.

Postpolio syndrome may not be progressive

Article Abstract:

A five-year follow-up of 50 patients with postpolio syndrome found that the disability had not progressed significantly in the 10 patients examined so far. Although their muscle strength declined somewhat, so did muscle strength in a group of healthy individuals of the same age. Postpolio syndrome is characterized by fatigue, weakness and pain in people who have had poliomyelitis.
