Injury to research volunteers: The clinical-research nightmare

Article Abstract:

A trial was conducted for TeGenero by Parexel, a large contract research organization, at its facility outside London on six volunteers who were the first humans to receive TGN1412, a humanized monoclonal antibody designed as an agonist of the CD28 receptor on T lymphocytes in a hope that it would benefit patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia or autoimmune disease. However after the tests the six volunteers became desperately ill, had multiple-organ failure, and were transferred to an intensive care unit with the so-called cytokine release syndrome.

Worlds apart - tuberculosis in India and the United States

Article Abstract:

The contrast between India and the U.S. in the impact and management of tuberculosis shows how far treatments have advanced and how effective they can be if they are implemented successfully. India, despite making commendable progress in the 60 years since independence, is lagging far behind in the containment and management of the disease.
