Institutional obstacles to clinical research

Article Abstract:

The declining interest in patient-oriented research (POR) can be attributed to the decreasing exposure of medical students to basic laboratory courses and to the lack of inspiring teachers in clinical departments with increased emphasis on rote learning. Furthermore, medical students are burdened with educational costs and perception of increased incomein medical practice. The decrease in basic POR must be addressed by the National Institutes of Health, the Division of Research Grants and the different US medical schools.

The specialty unit within a teaching hospital

Article Abstract:

Developments in medical practice have created the need for specialty units which conduct research on single organ systems and their accompanying disorders. An example is the Thyroid Unit of the Massachusetts General Hospital. Created in 1914, this unit has remained in the forefront of thyroid gland research. Specialty units have proven themselves as effective sources of research and information in medicine.

The birth of patient-oriented research as a science

Article Abstract:

The 1911 letter of Rufus Cole of the then newly established Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research describes his wishes for patient-oriented research. Cole wanted close research collaboration between those physicians who dealt directly with the patient and those in the laboratory. The relationship of these two continues to be stand-offish so this letter is still worth reading.
