Integration of endoplasmic reticulum signaling in health and disease

Article Abstract:

Integration of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) signaling in health/disease is discussed. Change in the ER processing of cargo molecules by pathogens or inadequacies in cargo handling by the ER mechanisms in a range of diseases from cystic fibrosis to hemochromatosis and neuropathies such as Alzheimer disease shows a surprising role of the ER in cell fate control. Topics include chaperones in assisted folding in the ER and cellular control of ligands regulating ER export.

BMP-2 mediates retinoid-induced apoptosis in medulloblastoma cells through a paracrine effect

Article Abstract:

It is believed that retinoids cause extensive apoptosis of medulloblastoma cells. Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) was identified as a candidate mediator of retinoid activity, which induced medulloblastoma cell apoptosis, whereas the BMP-2 antagonist noggin blocked both retinoid and BMP-2-induced apoptosis.

The neuronal repressor REST/NRSF is an essential regulator in medulloblastoma cells

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the mechanism responsible for medulloblastoma tumorigenesis. Topics addressed include neuronal differentiation, and the use of neuronal repressor element 1 silencing transcription factor/neuron-restrictive silencer factor (REST/NRSF) in therapy interventions.
