International code: South Africa adopts CPT system

Article Abstract:

The private sector of the South African health care industry selected the American Medical Association's (AMA) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding system to monitor the reporting and reimbursement of physician services. South African health industry officials stated that they chose CPT over other coding systems because of its specificity and hierarchical structure. The AMA hopes South Africa's selection of CPT will encourage the World Health Organization to endorse CPT as the prototype for a global health services coding system.

Speakers at the 1997 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Meeting offered a wide variety of opinions about the progress of computerization of the healthcare industry. One expert warned that the new clinical systems can initially create more problems than they have solved. Speakers disagreed about the reluctance or eagerness of physicians to adopt the new information systems.
