International networker: nurses, perhaps least of all professionals, cannot hope to work effectively in isolation

Article Abstract:

Nurses worldwide have a large amount of knowledge that they are unable to share with their international counterparts. In the mental health field, nurses often work in isolation and few are able to share their experiences and knowledge with their colleagues abroad. In 1997, an international conference for psychiatric nurses will invite nurses to share their knowledge with others. It is hoped that eventually an international association for mental health nurses can be established.

Special contribution

Article Abstract:

The UK's high-security psychiatric, or special, hospitals, have traditionally been isolated from the wider professional community. They are still in a very different position from other aspects of mental health care, but their approach is not necessarily out-of-date. Indeed, nurses at these hospitals have played a key role in establishing client-centred services and in bringing the hospitals into the wider forum of mental health services.

The way it was

Article Abstract:

Psychiatric nursing has changed a lot over the last 32 years. Care in the community is now preferred over institutional care. However, not all seriously mentally ill people can be cared for in the community. Health care should be concentrated on mentally ill patients, instead of administrators and politicians.
