Interventional radiology in the chest and abdomen

Article Abstract:

Interventional radiology refers to the use of guidewires, catheters (thin tubes), balloons, and other devices to treat disorders under X-ray guidance. Although many interventional techniques have been applied to vascular problems, there are many other approaches which can be applied to non-vascular conditions. Some examples are: percutaneous biopsy (small biopsies of organs made through the skin, obviating the need for major surgery), fluid drainage and collection; treatment of strictures of the biliary (bile) system; placement of internal catheters; removal of gallstones; intervention in the urinary tract and kidney's urine collecting system; diagnosis of tumors; and insertion of tubes into the stomach. Development of imaging techniques to allow cross-sectional imaging, such as the CT (computerized tomography) scan, have facilitated these advances.
