Intra- and interobserver agreement and statistical clustering of placental histopathologic features relevant to preterm birth

Article Abstract:

An estimated 767 placental specimens were studied from case-control studies of preterm birth and preeclampsia nested within a prospective cohort of pregnant women recruited from four large Montreal maternity hospitals. Results indicate that intra- and interobserver agreement were high for membrane inflammation, funisitis and umbilical cord vasculitis and these three features were clustered statistically, consistent with an underlying mechanism of ascending infection.

Medroxyprogesterone acetate, but not progesterone, protects against inflammation-induced parturition and intrauterine fetal demise

Article Abstract:

The prevention of inflammation induced preterm parturition and fetal demise by the progestational agents are determined. Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), with its progestational and anti-inflammatory properties, prevented inflammation induced preterm parturition and preserved fetal viability.
