Intraoral contact allergy: a literature review and case reports

Article Abstract:

Oral care products, foods, and dental restorative materials can cause contact allergies in the mouth. Patients may experience burning, redness, swelling, peeling, and other symptoms from contact with allergy-inducing materials. Cinnamon is a very common oral allergen, and its presence in gums, toothpastes, mouthwashes, and breath mints is common. Small amounts added to coffee or contained in beverages like vermouth may be sufficient to elicit an allergy. A trial of food- and oral-hygiene-product elimination, and oral corticosteroids, may help to identify and relieve the allergy.

Necrotizing sialometaplasia: literature review and case reports

Article Abstract:

Four case reports illustrate the benign nature of necrotizing sialometaplasia. Necrotizing sialometaplasia is an inflammation of the salivary glands in the roof of the mouth. It appears as a fairly large ulcer. Patients can also experience fever, chills and swelling. It can be mistaken for cancer, but a simple biopsy will lead to the correct diagnosis. It is believed to be caused by some type of trauma that blocks the blood supply, resulting in dead tissue that rises to the surface, causing an ulcer. The ulcer generally heals naturally within 4 to 10 weeks.
