Investigation of a secondary syringe exchange program for homeless young adult injection drug users in San Francisco, California, U.S.A

Article Abstract:

A secondary syringe exchange program can be effective in reducing the risk of HIV infection in homeless drug addicts. These programs recruit drug addicts to collect used syringes from homeless addicts, exchange them for clean syringes at a needle exchange program, and distribute the clean syringes to the homeless addicts.

Mismatched human leukocyte antigen alleles protect against heterosexual HIV transmission

Article Abstract:

Different HLA genes may confer protection against the heterosexual transmission of HIV, according to a study of 41 couples, one of whom was HIV-positive. HLA DR5 in particular seemed to protect the uninfected member of the couple from contracting the infection.

Survey of nonoccupational HIV postexposure prophylaxis in hospital emergency departments

Article Abstract:

Many hospital emergency departments (EDs) are receiving requests for AIDS drugs from people who have been exposed to the virus in a non-occupational setting. A survey of 66 hospital EDs in Massachusetts found that half had received such requests.
