Involvement of nitric oxide pathway in prostaglandin F(sub)2alpha-induced preterm labor in rats

Article Abstract:

Nitric oxide appears to reverse the labor stimulating effects of prostaglandin F2-alpha (PGF2alpha). Nitrite production and contraction responses were evaluated in pregnant rats injected with either PGF2alpha, PGF2alpha and nitric oxide, or saline. Nitric oxide production decreased proportionally to increased PGF2alpha administration. Contractions increased proportionally to increased PGF2alpha administration resulting in premature labor in all stimulated animals. Adding nitric oxide blocked the contraction response produced by PGF2alpha.

Preterm birth in rats produced by the synergistic action of a nitric oxide inhibitor (NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester) and an antiprogestin (onapristone)

Article Abstract:

Several factors may work together to maintain pregnancy. Both nitric oxide and the hormone progesterone are known to inhibit uterine contractions. Researchers gave pregnant rats a continuous infusion of an inhibitor of nitric oxide production on day 16 of gestation. On day 17 some animals were injected with one of two amounts of an antiprogesterone. More than 70% of the rats given both treatments gave birth within a day of treatment versus less than 5% of animals receiving either treatment alone.

Localized increase in nitric oxide production and the expression of nitric oxide synthase isoforms in rat uterus with experimental intrauterine infection

Article Abstract:

Nitric oxide is produced during intrauterine infection according to a study on rats. It was produced by macrophages and natural killer cells and may be part of the body's response to infection.
