Iron deficiency in 1- to 3-year-old children: a pediatric failure?

Article Abstract:

A significant number of otherwise healthy children aged one to three have insufficient iron levels. Since iron deficiency in the first two years of life is strongly connected to impairment of mental and muscular control functions, this is a situation of concern. Blood tests of 504 New York City area children aged one to three showed that 35% had iron insufficiency, 7% were iron deficient without anemia, and 10% had iron deficiency anemia. Iron-fortified foods and iron supplements should be recommended to correct this situation and prevent it from happening in the future.

Two unusual pediatric presentations of sarcoidosis

Article Abstract:

Sarcoidosis is an unusual condition which can produce a wide variety of symptoms, and is characterized by the widespread formation of granular tumors. Doctors treated a 6-year-old girl with fever and abdominal pain, and ultimately found an abdominal mass and liver inflammation. She later developed inflammation in her calf, which led to a biopsy and a diagnosis of sarcoidosis. A 9-year-old girl had similar abdominal symptoms, evidence of kidney failure, and a pancreatic mass. Muscle inflammation, kidney failure, and symptoms in early childhood are uncommon in sarcoidosis.
