Iron deficiency in developed countries: prevalence, influence of lifestyle factors and hazards of prevention

Article Abstract:

Iron deficiency prevention should be targeted at those sections of the population in developed countries that are at risk, including migrants, vegetarians, the elderly, pregnant women, adolescents and young children. Iron deficiency is not a great health risk for the general population in developed countries and measures should not be taken to increase iron intake for all, as iron overload poses a health risk for approximately 10% of the white population who are vulnerable to hereditary haemochromatosis. Over 500 million people worldwide have iron deficiency anaemia.

A traditional beverage prevents iron deficiency in African women of child bearing age

Article Abstract:

Drinking iron rich traditional beer may play a role in preventing iron deficiency in African women of child bearing age, according to research undertaken among a population of 425 men and women involved in three on-going family studies of African iron overload and hepatocellular carcinoma. This research was carried out in the Murehwa and Zaka areas of Zimbabwe and the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. Consumption of traditional beer can cause iron overload, but this must be balanced against the risks of iron deficiency anaemia.
