Adverse effects of lupus anticoagulant positive blood sera on placental viability can be prevented by heparin in vitro

Article Abstract:

The effect of lupus anticoagulant positive sera [LA(super +)] on apoptosis, mitosis, and invasion of trophoblast with the use of placental explant cultures and the role of unfractionated heparin in regulating these functions is determined. It is concluded that lupus anticoagulant may impair placentation by increasing apoptosis, attenuating mitosis and reducing invasion of the trophoblast.

Is antenatal vitamin K prophylaxis needed for pregnant woman taking anticonvulsants?

Article Abstract:

A consecutive sample of infants exposed during pregnancy to anticonvulsant drugs was studied to determine if the mother received late pregnancy prophylaxis with vitamin K. There was no hemorrhagic disease observed and the incidence of bleeding was not higher in infants exposed to these drugs compared with control infants, despite no prenatal vitamin K supplements.
