Integrity and common sense in medicine

Article Abstract:

The president of the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society provides suggestions on how physicians can restore integrity and common sense to medicine. The rise of managed care, for-profit hospitals and capitation payments illustrates the lack of integrity and common sense in the current health care system. Overregulation often becomes nonsensical, as Philip Howard documented in his book, 'The Death of Common Sense'. A public backlash has begun against the managed care industry and it will hopefully be replaced by a more reasonable system.

A different look at medical ethics

Article Abstract:

A panel discussion involving physician assistants offers practical and timely considerations of medical ethics and issues affecting patient care. Issues such as gun control, abortion, assisted suicide, and technology-based interventions are explored by panel members. While there is disagreement as to how these issues should be handled, many agree that the social and political aspects of medicine play a strong role in the medical profession.
