Comparative study of fluconazole and clotrimazole treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis

Article Abstract:

A single oral dose of fluconazole may be equally effective in treating vulvovaginal candidiasis infections as a 3 day vaginal suppository treatment of clotrimazole. Candidiasis is a common yeast-like fungal infection of the mouth or vagina. Researchers treated 103 women with vulvovaginal candidiasis with either a single oral dose of fluconazole or a vaginal suppository dose of clotrimazole. Patients taking the clotrimazole inserted vaginal suppositories twice daily for 3 days. The 53 women taking fluconazole experienced a 79.2% cure rate one week following treatment. The 50 women taking clotrimazole experienced an 80.0% cure rate one week following treatment. The cure rates four weeks following treatment were 60.4% for women taking fluconazole and 66.0% for women taking clotrimazole. Patients reported only minimal side effects with both treatments. Fluconazole is, however, more expensive than clotrimazole.

Bartholinitis after vulvovaginal surgery

Article Abstract:

Three cases are described of women who developed an infection of the Bartholin gland after vaginal surgery. Bartolin's gland is a small gland at the entrance to the vagina that secretes mucus. Although these women's infections seemed clearly related to their surgery, infection of this gland after vaginal surgery is still very rare.
