A multimeter of wide diversity

Article Abstract:

Fluke has introduced its new Series 10 digital multimeters that can be used to deal with many of the problems encountered in modern electrical equipment that were difficult to investigate with earlier types. V-Chek is a new function that automatically switches the instrument to voltage mode if it encounters a voltage above 4.5 volts. Instruments without this facility could easily be damaged by encountering, say, mains voltage when set for measuring ohms, and the user could also be placed in danger. Another new facility is the ability to monitor maximum and minimum voltages or continuity over long periods, invaluable when trying to identify intermittent faults.

Island in the sun

Article Abstract:

Voluntary Service Overseas has sent qualified health care staff to support the health programmes in the Maldives. The islands' health programmes are poorly resourced but are achieving good results. The Indira Ghandi Memorial Hospital opened on the capital island in 1995 and the first group of nurses trained in the Maldives graduated that same year. Children are routinely vaccinated by visiting medical teams and infectious diseases are declining. However, only the capital island has dentists or psychiatric facilities and major surgery has to be carried out abroad.

Development juggernaut

Article Abstract:

Greek archaeologists argue that public works are threatening archaeological sites. They contend that the government plans to build a highway that threatens Dodona and other historically vital sites. Furthermore, the government's plan to build an airport in Athens has been blocked, because opponents argue would further pollute the air around Athens. This part of Athens contains 40 archaeological sites. However, millions of dollars are involved in these public works, and political ambitions may undermine the importance of these historical sites.
