Critical appraisal of the use of nuchal fold thickness measurements for the prediction of Down syndrome

Article Abstract:

A new method of diagnosing Down syndrome using nuchal fold thickness is presented that incorporates gestational age and maternal age. The nuchal fold is part of the fetal neck.

Isolated fetal choroid plexus cysts: role of ultrasonography in establishment of the risk of trisomy 18

Article Abstract:

A cyst in a part of the fetal brain called the choroid plexus may be a marker for trisomy 18. These cysts can be seen on a ultrasound scan. Researchers calculate that a fetal chorid plexus cyst increases the risk of trisomy 18 seven times.

Ultrasonographic differential diagnosis of fetal intracranial interhemispheric cysts

Article Abstract:

Ultrasound imaging may be very effective in distinguishing benign intracranial cysts from those with a more serious prognosis. Intracranial cysts are collections of fluid inside the brain. Researchers used prenatal ultrasound imaging to investigate 19 fetuses with intracranial cysts. Twelve fetuses had benign cysts, which were usually less than one inch in size and stayed at that size on subsequent exams. Seven fetuses had more serious cysts, which ranged from half an inch to over three inches and grew bigger on subsequent exams. Five of these fetuses also had other severe brain abnormalities.
