It's time to douse fire on physician pay

Article Abstract:

The Families USA Foundation public opinion poll on physician salaries reflects the public's ignorance of the training and skills involved in the practice of medicine. Respondents underestimated the actual salaries of physicians; they judged the salaries of physicians in two specialties to be about $100,00, or less than half of their actual average salary. Their idea of a 'fair' salary was 20% less than the inaccurate figure. Focusing on the false issue of physician salaries detracts from the real issues and institutions that must be addressed in health care reform.

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association's (AMA) MD 2000 advertising campaign's goal is to bridge the gap between physician and patient by showcasing the professionalism and high ethical standards of the membership. The advertisements profiling individual members have appeared in magazines such as US News and World Report, Newsweek and Time. Members are challenged to take the AMA's message to their patients, as well as to colleagues who are not members.

What is real cause of U.S. complaints about health care?

Article Abstract:

People are more dissatisfied with the health care insurance system than with the quality of care that physicians provide. A 1991 American Medical Assn survey indicated that only 10% of the respondents were beginning to lose faith in their own personal physicians. However, because the public lacks understanding of the issues involved, it tends to blame physicians in general for problems in the health care system.
