Kansas, Kansas City Blues plans merge, eye expansion

Article Abstract:

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City have announced plans to merge; physicians are approaching the deal with cautious optimism. The combined plan, which is subject to approval by both state insurance departments, will cover over 1.4 mil members with annual revenues of $1.3 bil. The merger is expected to be completed by the end of 1997.

Empire Blues to move into N.J. indemnity market

Article Abstract:

Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield of New York has purchased Central National Life Insurance Co. of New Jersey, a move that gives Empire a license to sell indemnity health insurance in New Jersey. The acquisition will allow Empire to offer managed care to customers working in New York and living in New Jersey. Empire is also planning hospital and physician networks for New Jersey.

Local health plans could top big HMOs in '97

Article Abstract:

The shift from indemnity to managed care insurance will continue in 1997, with mergers among local health plans and hospitals further consolidating less-mature markets. Health care premiums are expected to increase slightly due to increased consumer demand for quality and accountability. Health insurers will be pushing to increase market share in 1997.
