Article Abstract:

Nurses took on an expanded role in the delivery of a direct current cardioversion (DCC) service at a hospital in Northumberland, England. This procedure uses electric current to treat atrial fibrillation. Increased awareness of the service placed pressure on the staff, patients often had DCCs cancelled when it was found they had inadequate blood clotting levels, and patient information was poor. Increased nursing responsibility for the service led to improvements including better communication with patients and the introduction of blood testing prior to DCC.
