Knee replacement underused, says panel: useful option when nonsurgical therapies fail

Article Abstract:

Knee replacement surgery is a cost-effective treatment for severe osteoarthritis of the knee, according to a panel of experts convened by the National Institutes of Health's Office of Medical Applications of Research who reviewed 20 years of data on this topic. About 300,000 knee replacement operations are performed in the US each year. The operation is successful in reducing pain and disability in 90% of patients, and 85% of patients are satisfied with the result.

Medical marijuana center opens doors

Article Abstract:

Researchers at the San Francisco and San Diego campuses of the University of California are studying the medical uses of marijuana using initial funding from the state. The research is coordinated at the San Diego campus by the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research. California voters legalized the medical use of marijuana in 1996 and nine other US states have also done so.

Easing the Elderly Online in Search of Health Information

About 300 people attended a conference sponsored by the Spry Foundation to discuss ways to help elderly people get online. The Spry Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for seniors.
