Knowledge of disinfection

Article Abstract:

In-service education should be provided for health-care workers each time a new policy is introduced in order to ensure staff comply with the established guidelines. A study of 60 health-care hospital workers showed they were not always aware of the correct procedure to follow for chemical disinfecting despite the existence of a disinfectant policy. Eleven percent of those surveyed incorrectly assumed they did not need to wear protective clothing and 11% selected the wrong substance for decontaminating blood spillage. The results of the study are presented.

Auditing problems

Article Abstract:

A survey of an infection control clinical nursing audit at the Lister Hosital, Stevenage, England has revealed nurses' limited knowledge of audit. A review of three-monthly audits revealed no changes in practice. A random sample of 20 nurses participated. A questionnaire achieved an 85% response. The survey indicated that nurses valued the audit as a means of monitoring practice. However, there was little understanding of audit application. Recommendations included more effective education in the principles of audit.
