Laparoscopic surgery: the effects of insufflation gas on tumor-induced lethality in nude mice

Article Abstract:

Surgeons who perform laparoscopic surgery on cancer patients should heat the carbon dioxide gas used during the procedure. Reports of abdominal cancer occurring after laparoscopic surgery indicate potential problems with the technique. Researchers simulated laparoscopic surgery in mice using helium gas, carbon dioxide gas, and heated carbon dioxide gas and then injected tumor cells into their abdomens. Survival rates were lower in the mice who received carbon dioxide gas, which is routinely used in laparoscopic surgery. For unknown reasons, heated carbon dioxide gas did not lower survival rates.

Treatment of uterine fibroid tumors in a nude mouse model using high-intensity focused ultrasound

Article Abstract:

A single high-focused ultrasound treatment reduced tumor size by 91% on average over a one-month period in 60 mice inoculated subcutaneously with a uterine fibroid cell line. This non-invasive method may benefit many women with uterine fibroids.

Monoclonal antibody MAb-170 for immunoscintigraphic detection of ovarian tumors

Article Abstract:

The monoclonal antibody MAb-170 is very effective in diagnosing ovarian cancer. In a study of 82 patients, MAb-170 detected 88% of the cancers and accurately ruled out cancer in 90% of the women who did not have cancer.
