Large vessel occlusive disease associated with CREST syndrome and scleroderma

Article Abstract:

Large vessel occlusive disease may sometimes occur in patients with scleroderma or CREST syndrome. Scleroderma is chronic hardening and thickening of the skin that may be caused by several different diseases. CREST syndrome is a less severe form of scleroderma. One patient with scleroderma and three patients with CREST syndrome were diagnosed with large vessel occlusive disease, characterized by narrowing or obstruction of large arteries. All four patients suffered severe complications from large vessel occlusive disease of the arms and legs. The patients with CREST syndrome developed large vessel disease more than 10 years after diagnosis with Raynaud's phenomenon (RP). RP is characterized by decreased blood flow to fingers and toes and sometimes to the eyes and nose. RP was the first symptom of large vessel occlusive disease in these patients.

Distribution of macrovascular disease in scleroderma

Article Abstract:

Examination of the ulnar artery may indicate the progression of blood vessel disease in patients with scleroderma. Scleroderma is an autoimmune connective tissue disorder. Researchers used duplex Doppler ultrasound to compare the blood vessels of 20 scleroderma patients and 20 healthy volunteers. Ulnar arteries in the forearms of scleroderma patients were significantly narrowed, and the artery walls were thicker, compared to healthy people. Ultrasonography of the ulnar artery may help determine the prognosis of patients with scleroderma.
