Leprosy in Yemen

Article Abstract:

There are many myths about leprosy in Yemen, but new public health measures are starting to change the lives of those who suffer from the disease. In 1989, Yemen launched the National Leprosy Control Programme with hospital services at City of Light in Taiz and field outreach to 80% of country.

The legacy of leprosy research

Article Abstract:

The bacterium that causes leprosy was discovered in 1873, but research was slow because the pathogen could no be grown in a test tube. Researches then discovered that mice and armadillos could be hosts, furthering the discovery of drug treatments such as dapsone and the multidrug therapies.

The legacy of leprosy

Article Abstract:

The fear and folklore that leprosy patients face can be overcome with education of the community. When the former patients ar released back into society, they are no longer contagious, are healed and do not transmit the disease. Modern treatment and cures for leprosy are described.
