Lessons a young physician learned from a dying man

Article Abstract:

The experiences of a young physician who disagreed with the decisions that a dying patient made are presented. The young doctor was dismayed when a patient who was dying of cancer requested that his kidney function be restored through an expensive surgical procedure. Three months later the dying man thanked his physician profusely for giving him the time to set his personal life in order before facing the end. The young doctor realized that such decisions are intensely personal and should not be made on the basis of cost-to-benefit considerations.

Physician extenders: expanding services in managed care

Article Abstract:

Nurse practitioners, physician assistants and midwives can help physicians increase productivity and increase patient access to health care. These employees could be delegated certain clinical duties, such as completing physical demands, providing health education, and treating common ailments. Using alternative clinical providers can improve the cost efficiency of the medical practice as well as boost patient satisfaction.
