Licensing proposals seek to overhaul current system

Article Abstract:

A task force of the Pew Health Professions Commission has issued a report outlining 10 steps to increase workforce regulation. These include a plan to separate scopes of practice so that more than one type of health professional, if qualified, could perform a particular service. Physicians are expected to mount considerable opposition to this plan because it removes their monopoly on certain services. Some physicians believe, however, that this monopoly is important to public safety. Additional recommendations of the report are presented and discussed.

Getting more doctors on board

Article Abstract:

The issue of board certification for physicians is becoming more critical as managed care plans increase their demands for such certification. Over a third of the doctors in the U.S. are noncertified and pressure is growing to deal with this situation. Obtaining certification entails several problems, including test qualification requirements that vary by medical society.

Medical board plan would speed telemedicine licensing

Article Abstract:

The Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States has proposed a model law which would enable physicians holding a full, unrestricted state medical license to apply for a limited license for practicing telemedicine over state lines. Such a license would be limited to remote practices and would not license a physician to practice physically in other states.
