Lifetime benefits and costs of intensive therapy as practiced in The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial

Article Abstract:

Treating all US residents who have insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) with intensive therapy is cost-effective when compared to other common medical treatments. Researchers used a Monte Carlo simulation model to estimate the lifetime benefits and costs if all 120,000 IDDM patients in the US injected insulin 3 or more times a day or used an insulin pump to control blood sugar. Intensive therapy would cost $19,987 per quality-adjusted year of life gained. The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial showed that intensive treatment significantly reduced the incidence of diabetic complications but was more expensive.

Using new insulin strategies in the outpatient treatment of diabetes: clinical applications

Article Abstract:

Guidelines are presented for doctors who want to prescribe new forms of insulin for their patients with diabetes. These new forms of insulin can allow patients to mimic the body's natural secretion of insulin. They can achieve better blood sugar control while minimizing the occurrence of low blood sugar.
