Limiting risk on retirement plans may not be worth it

Article Abstract:

New rules for employee-directed investment plans do not increase liability for a small business or a physician's practice if the investments perform poorly. Employees may sue the employer, however, if the plan is badly administered. The rules are not a major departure from previous standards but define when an employer or trust may be liable for poor management. Several steps for ensuring good management are outlined. Before taking steps to comply with the new rules, physicians should seek advice from a qualified, impartial attorney.

Protecting your investment

Article Abstract:

Physicians who own imaging centers are looking for buyers because of the change in rules concerning ownership of facilities to which patients are referred. Federal safe harbor rules limit physician ownership, and states are also expected to consider questions of self-referral. In addition, Medicare payments for imaging, which dropped 16% between 1990 and 1992, are expected to decrease further as managed care systems offer incentives for lower utilization.

Informed investing
