Localization of gonadotropin binding sites in human ovarian neoplasms

Article Abstract:

The cause of cancer of the ovaries is unclear, but receptors for certain hormones on the surfaces of cancer cells have been implicated. The cell receptors are thought to have a particular affinity for follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) or human chorionic gonadotropin (HcG), although involvement of this latter hormone is controversial. Tumor specimens from 29 patients with ovarian cancer were evaluated for hormone binding sites. Sites for FSH were found on five tumor samples. Sites for LH were found on two tumor samples. These binding sites were found in the stromal layer of the ovarian tissue. The way these hormone receptor sites respond to gonadotropin hormones needs to be investigated.

Immunohistochemical localization of inhibin and activin subunits in human epithelial ovarian tumors

Article Abstract:

Activins are hormones that increase the production of follicle-stimulating hormone and inhibins are hormones that inhibit it. Both hormones are produced by the ovaries. Activins also seem to stimulate cell proliferation. Researchers used antibodies against both hormones to identify their presence in ovarian tumor tissue samples from 32 women. Inhibins and activins were found in mucinous adenomas and cystic tumors with borderline malignancy. Activins were found in mucinous adenocarcinomas and serous tumors such as benign adenoma, cystic tumor with borderline malignancy and adenocarcinoma.

Production of inhibin A and inhibin B in human ovarian sex cord stromal tumors

Article Abstract:

An elevated blood level of the hormone inhibin may indicate the presence of human ovarian sex cord stromal tumors. Inhibin interferes with the production and secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone, and may be produced in excess by these ovarian tumors. Researchers tested samples of tumor removed from two patients. Inhibin-producing cells were located in the tumors with an antibody-based staining method. Blood levels of inhibin were elevated in the patients prior to surgical removal of the tumor, then fell to normal levels after surgery.
