London's fate

Article Abstract:

The Tomlinson report has criticised health provision in London, England. Concentration on acute hospital facilities has diverted resources from community services. Duplication of specialist services in teaching hospitals has exacerbated the problem. The report recommends concentration of hospital facilities on fewer sites and reallocation of resources to upgrade community provision. However, careful management of closures is essential to avoid longer hospital waiting lists.

Community spirit

Article Abstract:

Flexibility, independence and a sense of worth are the three main reasons given by community psychiatric nurses (CPNs) for preferring to work in the community environment rather than be located in a hospital. Seeing people in their own surroundings can provide a great deal of insight into the reasons for psychiatric difficulties and contributing factors preventing rehabilitation. Patients also tend to respond more positively when receiving treatment in their own homes.

Bed cover

Article Abstract:

Harefield Hospital, London, has installed 188 French electric beds, which should help both nurses and patients. According to a senior sister from the transplant unit, Sue Hardy, nurses have suffered back injuries as a result of lifting and twisting patients, which the new beds should relieve. Patients should also benefit by being more independent and suffering fewer bedsores and injuries from being handled.
