Long and winding road

Article Abstract:

Psychiatry in the UK is governed by the public's perception, which is usually media-influenced, ill-informed and hysterical in its nature. The care of mentally ill people within a country will often reflect the overall economical, sociological and ethical nature of the population and government. Radical plans to reduce the cost of mental health care during the 1980s led to the introduction of care in the community on the basis it was cheaper, better for patients and less of a burden to the tax payer. Psychiatry should not be mismanaged by politicians but led by educated health professionals.
