Long term persistent accumulation of CD8+ T cells in synovial fluid of rheumatoid arthritis

Article Abstract:

Long-term CD8+ T cell production in the joint fluid of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) suggests that these immune cells may contribute to the continued inflammation seen in these patients. Joint fluid and blood samples from nine patients with RA were analyzed genetically and by immune cell type. Identical cells seen most frequently in the joint fluid were CD8+ T cells. The same cell type was seen repeatedly in samples taken periodically over a year's time. There were markers present on some cells indicating the cells had a capacity to retain information for more efficient future immune responses.

Type II collagen is a target antigen of clonally expanded T cells in the synovium of patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Article Abstract:

T cells from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may attack type II collagen in the joints, promoting joint destruction. Researchers compared T-type lymphocytes from the synovial membrane of RA patients with T-cells from the blood that had been stimulated with collagen. In 17-25% of samples tested, the synovial cells resembled the stimulated cells. T cell damage to joint collagen may underlie the symptoms of RA.

Characterisation of T cell clonotypes that accumulated in multiple joints of patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Article Abstract:

The authors investigated the accumulation of T cells in various joints of rheumatoid arthritis patients to determine if they were clonotypes, that is identical. They found that a large percentage of the T cells found in one joint were identical to those found in other joints of the same patient.
