Article Abstract:

The creation of the UK National Health Service was mainly the result of the work of Aneurin Bevan, according to Sylvia Diggory, who met Bevan when she was in hospital in 1948 at the age of 13 with acute nephritis. She was the first NHS patient. She takes a strong interest in health care, and believes that the NHS has made significant progress since 1948. However, she has concerns about the future of nursing, including the fact that hospitals are making increasing use of agency nurses.

A fly on the wards

Article Abstract:

The BB2 documentary series 'Nurse,' which follows the fortunes of a group of student nurses in Newcastle, England, could deter some people from considering nursing as a career, according to producer Jenny Abbott. The series, which took four years to make, gives an unsentimental insight into the challenges facing student nurses, including heavy work loads and low income. However, it also emphasizes the job satisfaction nursing can bring.
