MRI reveals gene activity in vivo

Article Abstract:

A new technique that uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to create high-resolution images in vivo gene expression deep in the body's tissues is developed. Designed for use in preclinical research on gene therapy or studies with transgenic animals, this noninvasive technique could be applied to fields as varied as cancer research, neuroscience, and pharmacology and might also be applied to humans.

Genomics proving a powerful tool for mapping the landscape of the brain

Article Abstract:

The emergence of genomics has provided a basis for the development of new tools for systematically mapping all the genes and regions of the brain. The Allen Brain Atlas project helps to map thousands of genes expressed in the mouse brain and scientists have developed an automated technique that fluorescently labels the messenger RNA of the gene of interest in brain slices.

Pain studies illuminate placebo effect

Article Abstract:

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has helped scientists to better comprehend the brain mechanisms of the placebo effect, which is found to be mediated by the endogenous opioid system. Knowledge about the placebo effect from such technologies may change the manner in which clinical trials are conducted, and assist in the treatment of pain and other ailments.
