Show a leg

Article Abstract:

Employing a holistic approach to treating people with leg ulcers enables patients to become more involved in their own care, which reduces the sense of isolation and anxiety often found because of the social stigma attached to leg ulcers. Establishing a leg ulcer club enabled patients to talk to each other about the problems encountered, such as immobility and unpleasant odours. Patients involved in the club showed a higher level of committment towards their treatment.

How a short stretch can work wonders

Article Abstract:

An arterial ulcer very often occurs in patients suffering from Buerger's disease, which can cause gangrene and blood vessel complications. The disease is predominantly found in men who smoke, due mainly to a link with tobacco. A Buerger's disease patient was successfully treated using a short-stretch bandaging system which helped reduce the symptoms of oedema caused by restriction of the blood vessels in the legs.
