Making sense of accidental exposures to blood and body fluids

Article Abstract:

Precautions should be taken by nurses to avoid the risk of contracting blood-borne disease by accidental exposure to blood or body fluids. All nurses should be immunised against hepatitis B as it has been estimated that unvaccinated health-care staff have an up to 30% risk of contracting the disease from infected patients. However, health-care workers have a no greater risk of contracting HIV than the general community. Advice on how to minimise the risk of infection from patients and what to do should exposure occur is discussed.

Body language

Article Abstract:

It is common for knowledge gained and communicated through the body to not be taken seriously, even in medicine and medical ethics. Young children, for example, use their feelings and their body language as a way of learning and speaking, and this means that their knowledge is often overlooked. Ill children are often seen simply as a body which is malfunctioning, and professionals tend to mistrust their body language.

Body parts and the law

Article Abstract:

The legal issues relating to the removal and use of body parts in the UK are discussed. There is a clear need for a way to handle the body legally that protects people's rights and guards against exploitation. A new way forward may be offered by the Genetic Privacy Act 1995 and the European Convention on Human Rights.
