Managed health care and resident education

Article Abstract:

Managed care appears to be impacting many resident training programs. Researchers surveyed 210 directors of obstetrics-gynecology resident training programs. Sixty-three percent felt that obstetrician-gynecologists should be the primary care physician for women but over 20% said their contracts with managed care organizations restricted or limited the involvement of their residents in the care of patients. Fifty-nine percent of the programs have seen a drop in the number of patients and 47% have experienced budget cutbacks.
