Marathon man's run of success

Article Abstract:

Michael Coulson stopped needing medication to control his type 2 diabetes after finishing a three-month exercise and diet programme. He lost 10.5 kilograms in weight during the prescribed exercise programme, which was funded by health and local authorities in Bolton, England. Most individual programmes are based around a moderate level of exercise supported by a change to healthy eating patterns. Success depends upon a teamwork approach by health professionals and fitness instructors, and a positive attitude in the participant. Coulson now aims to complete a marathon.

Plugging the gap

Article Abstract:

Inadequate health provision for ethnic minority groups in the United Kingdom is highlighted in diabetes care. Diabetes is more prevalent among the Asian population. However, communication problems are likely because nursing education pays little attention to medical anthropology and culture differences. About 200,000 UK residents may not be fluent in English but interpreters and translated information are largely unavailable. Inadequate knowledge may result in stereotyping and generalisation.
