Market spawns doctor-patient alliances

Article Abstract:

State legislatures are considering bills to protect the interests of patients and physicians in managed care. California, for instance, requires HMOs to provide procedures for grievances and complaints. The American Medical Assn provides standards to prevent managed care plans from such actions as discriminating against patients with serious illnesses. Citizens' groups and state medical assns are lobbying for laws that protect patients' rights.

N.Y. governor brokers deal on managed care protections

Article Abstract:

The New York State Legislature is expected to pass a bill which offers extensive protections for providers and patients enrolled in managed care plans. The 91-page bill is the product of eight weeks of negotiations between state legislators and managed care representatives, patients and physicians. The bill addresses out-of-network referrals, care for patients with chronic diseases, utilization reviews and payment for emergency care.

Western voters face variety of health-related initiatives

Article Abstract:

Voters in key Western states will consider legal controls on managed care, Medicaid eligibility and medical use of marijuana in 1996. Managed care groups vehemently oppose the proposed restrictions on managed care, claiming they would raise costs significantly. The health-related ballot initiatives are centered on the states of Oregon and California, two of the states with the strongest health maintenance organization penetration.
