Medical marijuana, American federalism, and the Supreme Court

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court, in Gonzalez V Raich, held that federal law enforcement authorities could criminally prosecute patients for possessing marijuana prescribed by a physician in accordance with state law. In order to avoid drug abuse of medical marijuana, sound policy is required based on public health, a rigorous research agenda, a private patient-physician relationship, and relief of patient suffering.

Biomedical research involving prisoners: Ethical values and legal regulation

Article Abstract:

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has asked the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to develop a new ethical framework for prisoner research and identify regulatory safeguards. The controversies surrounding IOM's proposals concerning biomedical research and the health care systems for prisoners are discussed.
