Medicine and public health join forces

Article Abstract:

The Medicine-Public Health Initiative has spawned over 500 examples of cooperation between physicians and public health officers. One example is the Local Information Network Communication System (LINCS) begun by the New Jersey health department. Another is allowing medical students to do a clerkship at a public health department. The initiative was begun by the American Medical Association and the American Public Health Association in an effort to bring both disciplines closer together.

Virtual patients help medical students link basic science with clinical care

Article Abstract:

Eight US medical schools are participating in a global experiment in medical education called the International Virtual Medical School. This consists of stories that faculty members make up about fictional patients, whose cases are then posted on the medical school's web site. First-year medical students read these cases and begin learning medical terminology while they are learning basic science.
