Article Abstract:
The University of Glasgow, Scotland carried out a research project at the beginning of 1992 on the operation of safety representatives and committees in organisations. The interviews involved 23 organisations and covered length of service, training, workload, activities and mode of operation. Some results were that: most of the organisations had given little new training to newly appointed and long-serving safety representatives; there was little change in the duties of representatives except in the introduction of safety audits and inspections and that much of the information was too technical for representatives to comprehend.

More than a quarter of the HSE's spending on research went on in house work undertaken by Research and Laboratory Services Division (RLSD). The RLSD has a new ergonomics and behavioural science unit undertaking studies such as links between musculoskeletal disorders and working practices.

The United Kingdom's Health and Safety Groups operate all over the country and provide information and service to companies. A Loughborough University investigation into Manchester and Merseyside's Safety Information Centres is described.
