Mental-health check

Article Abstract:

Nurses involved in primary health can can carry out a useful role in assessing the mental health of patients, to check for depression, anxiety and other problems. Risk factors include bereavement, social isolation, problems at work or lack of work, and money or housing problems. Patients can be helped to solve their problems through information on local support groups. This type of assessment can uncover problems which might otherwise be missed, and though it does involve spending more time with patients, this can be considered as an investment.

Alternatives to hospital-based mental health care

Article Abstract:

Mental health care has move more into the community away from traditional hospital bases and many areas have developed services offering acute home based mental health care. Community services can increase the accessibility which means that those with less severe illnesses will receive services at the expense of those with serious mental illness. A community treatment team (CTT) was established in Cornwall staffed by community psychiatric nurses (CPNs) with the aim of providing home based treatment for those who are seriously mentally ill.
