Microbiological examination of blood for septicaemia

Article Abstract:

Very few species of bacteria account for the majority ofsepticaemia infections, and about 60% of septicaemia infections are acquired in hospital due toinvasive medical procedures, such as urinary catherterisation and surgery. Visual confirmation ofbacteraemia is difficult therefore a blood sample needs to be cultured in a nutrient solution,increasing the number of bacteria. Identified bacteria needs to be tested against severalantibiotics to determine their effectiveness.

Article Abstract:

Diabetes management depends on accurate blood glucose monitoringwhich is often undertaken in a ward environment by capillary blood samples, along with reagentstrips or a reflectance meter. The capillary sample is a strip which is ready visually against acolour code, or placed in a meter which detects the colour of the reagent pad. Meters are thoughtto offer more accurate results than personal judgement, and visually read strips have lesspotential for major errors.
