Milk of human kindness is back in fashion

Article Abstract:

The Labour government has requested that the Black report, produced in 1980, should be brought up to date so that social inequality and its relation to health can be re-examined. The Black report revealed that poor housing and unemployment were detrimental to health, and the working party advised that school meals and milk should be free to poor children, however, this was not accepted by the Conservative government at the time. The Labour government will need to address these issues, and also consider other causes of poor health, such as environmental problems and food safety.

All the right noises

Article Abstract:

Labour Party Health Secretary Chris Smith would focus on the impact on health of poor housing, unemployment and poverty if a Labour Government was returned to office at the next general election. Smith would introduce a cooperation-based health service to replace the existing market-driven service and plans to provide cottage hospitals for aged patients to recuperate from acute hospital stays. Labour would establish a Royal Commission to tackle the problem of funding long-term care of the elderly.

Losing contact with ground control

Article Abstract:

UK nurses views are not being taken into account in the plans to establish health action zones (HAZs). National Health Service managers are mainly responsible for drawing up proposals to put into practice the government policy of building better partnerships between health care agencies. There have been 41 bids for HAZs in 1998. The government has allocated a fund of 400,000 pounds sterling each for 10 pilot projects to be established in March 1998.
