Molecular cytogenetics: an essential component of modern prenatal diagnosis

Article Abstract:

Fluorescence in situ hybridization appears to be a useful tool to complement other prenatal genetic testing. Fluorescence in situ hybridization tests can detect genetic abnormalities not visible under a light microscope. Doctors could specifically identify a genetic abnormality in 25 of 35 pregnant women tested with fluorescence in situ hybridization. Researchers illustrated the usefulness of this technique in 5 pregnant women carrying fetuses with genetic abnormalities. Benefits of this method include rapid results and more specific genetic information.
