Moonlighting: a student's lot?

Article Abstract:

Many mature nursing students in the UK have to take on part-time work in order to meet their financial commitments. Some take on nursing work through care agencies, while others find work in pubs or restaurants. In many cases, they can be working many hours a week, but still need to find time to study. The average age of nursing students is rising, and this means that child care is a particularly important issue. Some National Health Service trusts run creches, but these are often only for use by salaried staff.

Fighting to keep my baby: Nurse Penny Roberts has severe disabilities and faces having her newborn baby taken away from her

Article Abstract:

A nurse describes her fight to keep her unborn baby which may be taken into care after the birth. The nurse, who is quadriplegic since a sky-diving accident, would be a single parent and lacks the support of a family network. Her care bill has been estimated at 1,000 pounds sterling a week following the birth. She believes she will be able to cope if the hours worked by her agency carer and domestic helper were redistributed. It is likely that the dispute will have to be resolved in court.

Trusts bust deadline on local pay deals

Article Abstract:

The National Health Service Executive had originally planned that at least 50% of trusts would have reached local pay settlements by Nov 12, 1996. However, this has in fact happened at only one in eight trusts. The delay in reaching local pay deals will have a negative impact on efforts to set up an uprating figure for 1997. Unison has stated that the lack of local pay settlements indicates that local pay is not a viable option for health care personnel.
