Polymath boys for Brazil

Article Abstract:

Many Brazilian academics also work in business or in politics. There has been a tradition of academics having a role outside universities since the aftermath of the Second World War. Former President Getulio Vargas recognized the need to use educated people to help to bring the country up to date. President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, who was reelected in 1998, has also brought academics into his cabinet to help reform Brazil. Cardoso is keen on improving education in Brazil, particularly for children under the age of 16 years. Cardoso has an academic background and was a professor.

Mosquitoes and mosquito repellents: a clinician's guide

Article Abstract:

Insect repellants, permethrin-treated clothing, and elimination of local sources of standing water most effectively prevent mosquito bites. Mosquitoes are attracted to humans by exhaled carbon dioxide, lactic acid, skin temperature and moisture, and other factors. Repellants containing DEET are highly effective and relatively safe, and formulas containing 10-35% DEET for most applications. Formulas containing less than 10% DEET are safest for children. Citronella products are moderately effective. Ultrasonic repellants and bug zappers are ineffective.
